Health and Safety Policy

Perth Markets Limited is committed to protecting the health and safety of everyone in our workplace including employees, contractors, lessees and other visitors.

General Safety

Emergency & Evacuation

  • If in immediate danger, or on hearing the alarm;
  • Do not panic. Try to remain calm.
  • Make sure you know the location of your nearest exit and alternative exits.
  • Ensure to follow the instructions communicated by fire wardens, PML Market Officers and automated alarm systems.
  • Make your way to the emergency assembly/muster point.

First Aid & Emergency

  • All PML Market Officers are trained in first aid.
  • A first aid room is located at the PML Administration Office.
  • First aid equipment including oxygen and a defibrillator is located at the PML Administration Office, CTA Office and PML Patrol Vehicle. Child defibrillator pads are also available at these locations.
  • Emergency phones are also available on site.

High Visibility Clothing

  • It is important to wear high visibility clothing at all times when operating inside the confines of the PML compound.
  • High visibility vests must be worn in all areas of the public market where forklifts have access. This includes the CTA, warehouses and common areas.
  • High visibility vests must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS 4602.1:2011

Pedestrians

  • Pedestrians must use designated walkways and crosswalks marked on site.
  • Be aware of traffic, particularly forklifts operating throughout the site.

Smoking Restrictions Apply on Site

  • Non smoking signs must be observed.
  • Designated smoking areas are available.

Site Speed Limits

  • Motor vehicles must adhere to the site speed limit of 30km/h on Ring Road.
  • The areas in and around the CTA and warehouses are strictly 10km/h.

Roadways

  • Stop signs for all vehicles to be observed prior to entering/exiting the CTA Central East/West Roadway. Buildings and trucks can obscure those driving along the roadway between the buyers car park and the sides of the CTA tenancies.
  • Convex mirrors to aid vehicles entering and exiting the CTA Central East/West roadway should be used.
  • Helmets must be worn by drivers of motor bikes, motor scooters and bicycles and is enforceable under amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1974.
  • No shortcuts are to be taken through car park bays.

Animals

  • Animals are not permitted on site.

Tenant & Employee Safety

Forklift Operation

  • Drivers must hold a valid Market City Forklift license plus a current motor vehicle license to operate forklifts.
  • The forklift speed limit is 10km/h at all times.
  • Drivers must have their seatbelts fastened.
  • All give way and strop signs must be obeyed.
  • Driving lights must be illuminated when forklift is in operation.
  • The load on the forklift must be safety and securely stacked.
  • Maximum of 15 pallets must not be exceeded or load must not protrude past the height of the boom (with some exceptions).
  • Pedestrians have the right of way on crosswalks.
  • Gas refuelling facility procedures must be obeyed at all times. NO FILLING OF GAS BOTTLES unless attached to a forklift.
  • No shortcuts are to be taken through the buyers parking areas.

Trucks & Other Vehicles

  • Speed limits is 30km/h on Ring Road, 15km/h at the site entry and exits and 10km/h in and around the CTA and warehouses.
  • All loads must be secure before movement on site.
  • Parking out of designated areas and/or without parking permits is subject to fines being imposed.

Hazard Reporting

Where a hazard is identified,

  • Rectify the situation, if possible.
  • If it is not possible to rectify the event then the area should be made safe and prevent unsuspecting persons from interacting with the hazard.

Contractor Safety

Work Permits

Prior to engaging in works on site, a signed work permit or written permission must be obtained from Perth Markets Limited. 

Work permits are required for the following tasks:

  • Hot work
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Woking in isolation
  • Using high access equipment
  • Access to roof areas
  • On-site excavation
  • Penetration of fire walls and floors
  • Access to high voltage areas
  • Gas, water and electrical isolation

Equipment Use on Site

To use the scissor lift or the forklift man-cage, a booking must be made at the PML administration building and fees apply.  To make a booking click here

Hazard Reporting

Where a hazard is identified,

  • Rectify the situation, if possible.
  • If it is not possible to rectify the event then the area should be madesafe and prevent unsuspecting persons from interacting with the hazard
